Goma – Recovery from Volcanic Eruption

Mt Nyiragongo eruption

Following the volcanic eruption of Mt Nyiragongo in May 2021, 400,000 residents of Goma were forced to flee their homes, including the members of the widows’ cooperative based in and around the city. Lava flows engulfed homes, destroyed roads, severed electricity and water supplies, and earthquakes continued for days afterwards.

PRWOP launched a Just Giving campaign to raise emergency funds for when the women and children returned. We raised £1807 ($2450 USD) which we distributed between the project members to help them purchase essential household and start-up items which had been stolen or destroyed during the evacuation.

These funds also provided a day of training hosted by our partner, the Muungano Solidarite Association, enabling the women to come together, rebuild their business initiatives, and plan their next steps with the support of the group.

From all of the women and children, and all of us at PRWOP, we say THANK YOU 😃🙏 for your support – it made a difference!
