Generating Food and Income

Following the successful agricultural pilot in 2022, the women in Kahuzi Biega cooperative received a donation to help them purchase a small block of land which they have used to cultivate more crops.

Cabbages planted in 2022 were ready to harvest in the first two months of 2023. The group divided the crop in half, wth 50% going to market to generate income and 50% shared between the women for food.

Their plan is to diversify their crops, rotating them through the year. These tomatoe plants were grown from seed and will be ready to harvest in March, roughly one month after the cabbage harvest.

Between each harvest the women tend the field, improving the plot of land which requires drainage channels so as not to lose precious top soil when the heavy rains come.
